Jennifer Blessing joined the curatorial staff in 2002, after previously working at the museum from 1989–97. She is responsible for developing the Guggenheim’s photography collection as well as organizing photography-based exhibitions. Most recently Blessing curated Photo-Poetics: An Anthology, a group exhibition that explores new developments in contemporary photography.
Prior to Photo-Poetics, she organized the New York presentation of Carrie Mae Weems: Three Decades of Photography and Video (2014), an exhibition originating at the Frist Center for the Visual Arts in Nashville. In 2012, she collaborated with the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art to present Rineke Dijkstra: A Retrospective and Francesca Woodman.
During her tenure with the museum, she curated Haunted: Contemporary Photography/Video/Performance, which opened in March 2010 before traveling to the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao; Catherine Opie: American Photographer (2008); True North (2008) and Jeff Wall: Exposure (2007) for the Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin; Family Pictures (2007); Speaking with Hands: Photographs from The Buhl Collection (2004); and Rrose is a Rrose is a Rrose: Gender Performance in Photography (1997). Additionally, she contributed to Robert Mapplethorpe and the Classical Tradition (2005); Marina Abramović’s performance series Seven Easy Pieces (2005); Premises: Invested Spaces in Visual Arts, Architecture & Design from France, 1958–1998 (1998); and The Italian Metamorphosis, 1943–1968 (1994). www.guggenheim.org/staff/jennifer-blessing
