Thomas Houseago was born in Leeds, England and studied at the Leeds College of Art, then Central Saint Martins and then a studio program at De Ateliers in Amsterdam, where he met his first wife, American painter Amy Bessone. After eight years in Brussels and with no money, they decided to move to Los Angeles in 2003.
While working construction sites during the day, Thomas worked in his studio at nights. In 2006, the art collectors Mera and Don Rubell stopped by his studio at the insistence of art dealer David Kordansky. They bought everything they saw and offered to help with his bronze casting expenses. In 2010, he was included in the Whitney Biennial curated by Francesco Bonami.
He met his partner, an art therapist, Muna El Fituri in 2013.
