Cory Arcangel’s Since U Been Gone began as an obsession with Kelly Clarkson’s hit song of the same title, released in 2004. With “Since U Been Gone” as a cornerstone, Arcangel built his collection of CDs to encapsulate his favorite parts of the “California Music” genre from the past forty years. Threading the musical similarities between dream pop of the 2000s to the punk hits in the 1980s, Arcangel juxtaposes albums like Paris Hilton’s "Nothing In This World" and The Bangel’s "In My Room" next to the Ramone’s "Road to Run" and Nirvana’s "Smells Like Teen Spirit." As explained in Arcangel’s 2011 interview with the Whitney Museum of American Art, these albums are said to have inspired or influenced the sound of Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone." Originally filed in a black CD binder, a relic of the early-2000s pre-iPod era, Arcangel recreated the collection into fourteen screenprints as an unofficial documentation of the history of Clarkson’s biggest hit.
