XX, 2018, is a photograph from Thomas Demand’s series, Model Studies, which he began in 2011. Demand is best known for his photographs of paper and cardboard reconstructions of historical or newsworthy images. The Model Studies, however, picture existing architect’s models, including the work of John Lautner and the Japanese firm SANAA. XX is from a series of photographs

of models by the Austrian postmodernist architect Hans Hollein. Demand photographs the architect’s working models, rather than the finished ones made for clients. The artist is drawn to them because “they’re part of the creative process, and add insight and knowledge to the work.” These models

are often fragile and are rarely seen. Demand has said: “I liked the idea of something that may never see the light of day becoming part of the conversation. It’s really beautiful.”
