In Carriage painting, 2018 Paul Sietsema begins with

a found painting by an anonymous artist that he

purchased at a small auction house. He tore up bills of

different dollar denominations and scanned them. The

images of the currency as it fell onto the scanner were

then painted by hand in a photorealistic manner on

top of the found painting. The layering and materiality

of the painting points to assemblage and earlier avantgarde

aesthetics. Sietsema has often depicts coins and

credit cards in his paintings and works on paper and

he has expressed an interest in making physical the

symbolic value of currency.
