Since the 1970s, Haim Steinbach has developed a widely influential practice that redefines structures of presentation and investigates the relationship between object and art, object and architecture, culture and language, and collection and display. In his iconic shelf arrangements, everyday objects are removed from their original context and placed atop hand crafted wooden shelves to create a sculptural ensemble. By selecting and arranging objects – which range from the natural to the ordinary, the artistic to the ethnographic – the artist emphasizes their identities, inherent meanings and associations. An important influence in the growth of post-modern artistic dialogue, Steinbach’s work has radically redefined the status of the object in art.
