"Sun Overflow" (Transgression) has a special position in Uecker’s oeuvre because of its colour. The work was created only two years after Uecker had joined the ZERO group. ZERO stood for silence and quiet, an intermediate zone, in which an old state transitions into a new one. In the present work we also see two states. By applying nails to one half of the picture plane, Uecker expanded the pictorial space and introduced a third dimension, just as Lucio Fontana did, whom Piene called the spiritual father of ZERO. The warm yellow on the other half of the picture however, creates a metaphysical space, the way Yves Klein did with his Blue. The ZERO artists saw yellow as a neutral colour, not tainted by associations. In juxtaposing the expanded space on one half with the metaphysical space on the other, Uecker created a timeless and harmonious work.
